When I was in high school, I was convinced I was going to be a chef. I wanted to go abroad for culinary school, but my parents had one condition: get my bachelor’s degree first, and then I could do whatever I wanted. So I enrolled at Santa Monica College. A week later, at Shabbat dinner, I told my family I had also enrolled myself in a Japanese culinary program in Torrance. For four months, I went Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, learning everything from how to make the perfect sushi rice to how to slice vegetables with precision and properly break down a fish. I was 19 years old, surrounded mostly by people in their 40s and 50s who were training for new careers. As soon as I finished, I got a job as a sushi chef. I worked at that restaurant for a few months, and eventually, my life went in a completely different direction. Looking back, I’m really glad I did it. Not every experience has to lead perfectly into the next one. Some things are worth doing simply because, at that moment in your life, you love them. #dream #amirahobim #beverlyhills #sushichef
